Experiencing fish oil indigestion? There is a solution

It probably happens to a minority of people, but, when it occurs, fish oil indigestion can be an annoying problem. Many people are convinced of fish oil health benefits but the indigestion sensation is not worth the trade-off.

Two years ago I traveled across Japan. During my second week there I thought I was slowly turning into a burping machine due to the semi-raw fish I was eating. It wasn’t a pleasant experience.

PHYTOPLANKTON: The solution to fish oil indigestion

One of the sources of Omega-3, Phytoplankton are single-cell plants considered to be the lowest point in the animal food chain. Freely moving throughout the oceans of the world, they have an essential role in the process of photosynthesis. All sea creatures use phytoplankton as a food source.

Do they provide the same fish oil health benefits?

Many commercial processors of Phytoplankton state that they contain all the omega-3 benefits of fish and more:

• EPA and DHA (the fish oil Omega-3s)

• Omega -6, Omega-7, Omega-9

• Protein

• 22 Amino Acids

• Vitamins A, B, C and D

• Trace Minerals

• Phospholipids

But how does Phytoplankton prevent fish oil indigestion?

The omega-3s, EPA and DHA, are part of the phospholipids found in Phytoplankton. Phospholipid, being a fat, makes it easy for the brain to absorb the omega-3 compared to fish oil.

Because it is composed of single cells, it bypasses the liver and digestive system and goes directly into the blood and the brain. Fish oil is not in phospholipid form.

The result: no more fish oil side effects such as indigestion.

How is it made?

The phytoplankton is cultivated in large tanks using bio-reactors which will induce rapid growth. Meticulous measures are taken to ensure that no contamination occurs as this would corrupt the strain and ruin the entire production.

After this it is spun in a centrifuge to remove excessive water. Artificial seawater containing salts, nutrients and minerals are then added. Blending with kelp at this stage is a process used by some manufacturers to increase the nutritional value. This allows the phytoplankton to remain viable in pill form.

What do I look for?

Look for a quality product from established manufacturers.

Not all strains of phytoplankton contain outstanding nutrients. The best companies will have had a COA (Certificate of Analysis) performed by an independent laboratory. This will ensure that contaminants such as mercury are not present and that the strains being cultured contain all of the ingredients listed.

Does it cost more than fish oil?

You can judge by the brief description of how it is made that phytoplankton requires sophisticated manufacturing procedures. This is the reason for the added cost. In my estimation, it appears to be twice the cost of regular fish oil, perhaps $30 per month.

If you experience fish oil indigestion, and are convinced of its many benefits, the added cost should not be an issue.

Omega-3, whether taken in fish oil or phytoplankton, is a wonderful food supplement. It supports brain chemistry and helps us to experience more positive moods. This is great news for people who are looking for depression help in a natural way; one of the many fish oil health benefits.

I find that fish oil fits nicely into a detoxification plan providing me with more energy and greater mental clarity.
