Omega-3 Benefits

Are you looking for Omega-3 benefits to improve your health?

On the fish oil for depression page the significance of omega-3 fatty acids, and how they can influence our brains in a positive way, was discussed.

It can be an effective way of getting depression help in a natural way.

And now that the scientific community is realizing that Omega-3 has a major impact on health in general, studies are showing up which reveal even more benefits.

One of the benefits of Omega-3 is that it can be taken in ways other than eating fish.

Salba

Take Salba for instance.

Salba - Salba Nutritional Solutions - is a trade name for a grain called chia. Tiny in size, the grain is grown in Peru under controlled conditions to maximize its amazing health-supporting benefits.

I was first alerted to this grain by an extensive article appearing on the national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, on November 16th 2007.

Researched at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and printed on the American Diabetes Association website on August 8th 2007, this study involved diabetics who took up to four teaspoons of Salba each day for three months.

It shows remarkable test results such as:

• Decreased blood pressure (a six-point drop in systolic measurement)
• Inflammation reduction ( a decrease of 30% as measured by C.R.P)
• Blood thinning (clotting factors dropped 20%)
• Levels of EPA, an Omega-3 fatty acid, increased 80%

Also stated was the fact that 100 grams of Salba contains:

• As much Omega-3 fatty acid as a 32-ounce Atlantic salmon steak
• As much Magnesium as 10 stalks of broccoli
• As much Calcium as 2.5 cups of milk
• As much Iron as a half-cup of kidney beans

According to the article, researchers say that it is unclear which of Salba’s nutritional components made it so beneficial to the diabetics. Would I be wrong in assuming that the Omega-3 fatty acid component played a big part in this?

Cautiously, I would like to think of this Salba study when I refer to Omega-3 benefits.

Do I use it?

Every morning I blend it in with the powders of my nutritional shake. Although virtually tasteless and flour-like, it gives the drink a beautiful texture, rather like a milkshake.

The Omega-3 Index: Another one of the Omega-3 benefits

This is a new term proposed to assess the risk factor for coronary heart disease as reported in the Journal of Preventative Medicine, Volume 39, issue1, July 2004, Pages 212-220.

It states that Omega-3 fish oil has been demonstrated to decrease cardiac heart disease mortality.

Three factors, the two fish oil components, EPA and DHA, together with the red blood cell, and its own fatty acid, can be measured as a ratio, comparing one to the other.

These three factors make up the Omega-3 Index.

The article states that this could be a new indicator for predicting sudden cardiac death.

An Omega-3 Index of higher than 8% was associated with the greatest heart protection. An Omega-3 Index of less than 4% was associated with the least.

This study, and what it implies, has definitely been added to my list of Omega-3 benefits.

The bottom line:

Take your Omega-3 oils daily for the health of your brain and, according to this study, your heart as well.

Fish oil can also be an important part of your detox and cleansing program
